Questions
and Answers
How do I determine if I am a candidate for laser vision
correction?
Schedule a complimentary laser vision correction screening with our
office. This appointment will take approximately one hour. During the
consultation we will determine candidacy and which procedure would
offer the greatest benefit for your particular needs.
How long does it take to perform the procedure?
The actual laser time is typically less than 2 minutes per eye. A
person will be in the laser room for only 15 to 30 minutes for the
actual procedure. The total time spent in the laser center is generally
one to two hours. Most people are on their way 20 to 30 minutes
following the procedure.
Are both eyes treated on the same day?
Most patients who undergo laser vision correction have the procedure on
both eyes on the same day; however, the procedure can be performed
unilaterally as well.
Which procedure is better for my particular needs, PRK or
LASIK?
Both procedures are very effective in correcting nearsightedness,
farsightedness and astigmatism. LASIK is the procedure of choice for
people with higher degrees of correction. PRK and LASIK are both
appropriate for milder prescriptions. There are several factors that
should be considered prior to making any decisions about which
procedure best fits your needs. Dr Saidel will discuss all aspects of
each
procedure during your complimentary consult.
What happens the day of my procedure?
- The laser is programmed to your personal correction
- Anesthetic drops are placed into your eye
- Your laser refractive procedure is performed
- Postoperative instructions are given
- Dr. Saidel will exam your eyes before you leave
- Postoperative visits are scheduled with Dr. Saidel
- Total time 1-2 hours
Do we stand behind our results?
The University of Chicago stands behind our results. Should the
need for an enhancement arise, the retreatment will be provided at no
charge for 1 year for myopia and 2 years for hyperopia.
Is laser vision correction permanent?
Yes, laser vision correction results in a permanent change to
the shape of the cornea.
What are the risks?
No surgical procedure is without risks. Long-term
sight-threatening complications from PRK and LASIK are very uncommon.
The chance of having a serious vision threatening complication is much
less than 1%. Understanding potential risks allows you to make an
informed decision before undergoing laser vision correction. Dr. Saidel
will discuss potential risks in greater detail and answer any questions
you may have during your consultation.
